Episode 96 (video): The Phonetic Peg Word System Part 2

 

In this video you’ll learn exactly how the Phonetic Peg System mnemonic system works. In the last episode you saw me memorize – almost perfectly – a list of 20 top sci-fi movies. How did I do it? I’ll show you how each number becomes a letter, each letter becomes a word and each word becomes an image that will help you memorize just about any size list. Skeptical? You won’t be after seeing exactly how the Phonetic Peg System works.

    Good.. often called the phonetic peg word system phonetic because it is the sound the Peg letters make that is important .The time you spend on memorizing the peg letters is important. You are basically forming an association in your mind with something you already know. for example ‘ T’ for one has one down stroke ,’d’ is similar to ‘T’ i.e one down-stroke ‘T’ Looks like a hammer I used to use in a metal workshop at school for beating steel sheets into a particular shape it also looks like a simple balance , note these are my associations what I am doing is making the phonetic code as rock solid in my mind as possible by making more than one mental link to it why? because the time spent on learning the code pays dividends later if you forget one association another one pops up in the mind the code is embedded securely in mind . Do the same for the other codes and like the 1. bun, 2 . shoe etc system the codes are very hard to forget .
    Once code is learned via the sound the letter makes the numbers can be formed almost instantly from any word , note only pick the concrete ones . Note ‘w h y @ and the vowels ‘a,e,i,o,u ‘ have no meaning in this system .

    and ‘Mind and Memory Training by Earnst e wood , page 111, it goes back even further to the 1600’s but gets a bit clumsy . In the mind association is everything , the brain does not think in words , no matter what some people think and like in your pod casts on learning styles words are associated mostly by aural associations as well as visual associations each letter of the alphabet and then each word has been associated in the mind of an individual in a unique way the fact that you have by the time you are fully grown cannot remember the original association does not mean it is not there all it means is that it has faded into the background . If you sit long enough and think about/concentrate on a word of any kind the original associations sound and visual will begin to reappear.
    And finally note : if you are unfamiliar with a foreign language the words will be gibberish until you start making mental associations with the sound and form the letters make all your senses come into play even touch and smell can become part of the associations . how cool is your mind .People say that there is no Operation manual for our own minds , well there is.. its just that it is in bits an pieces of documents and books and can be ‘Googled’….
