Borderline Personality: What is it? Could Your Cell Phone Help Deal With It?

Play

Borderline Personality Disorder is a difficult disorder to understand and treat. Briefly, people who suffer from BPD tend to have a heightened sensitivity to rejection. When they feel that they are being rejected they can react with strong feelings of anger. Their emotions can be very intense and vary widely during the day. This can also make their relationships very unstable. They can also be very impulsive. However, a recent fascinating piece of research used a mobile device and what’s called an “experience sampling” technique to gain further insight into what it is like to have BPD. In this episode I discuss that research and then wonder what else we might be able to learn as our mobile devices become even more powerful.

  2. Sir,

I enjoyed your podcast on BPD. I am, once again, listening to two podcasts this week for homework. Since you asked for responses, I will say that I have not purchased one of the smart phones. One of the reasons is the expense of the phone levied against the things that a newer phone offers. Another reason that I am not that interested in purchasing an advanced cell phone is that I think they are getting out of hand being used for everything from GPS to being hacked for information. The most that my cell phone can offer someone who hacks into it is my contact list and some pictures. It is, as you mentioned, scary.

    Hello,
Funny story. I listen to two of your pod casts every week for homework (I am a psychology major) and I found it very interesting that the first one to pop up this week would be about BPD! I have Borderline Personality Disorder, so it was interesting to hear the professional report as well as listen about the study. Although it is a little "Big Brother is watching you", the idea of using smart phones to assist those of us with BPD in seeing full well what is triggering us is fairly ingenious. Even though simply knowing I have BPD has made reflection upon situations far more simple, there are times when I am struck by anxiety and rage (sometimes merely in physical manners) without fully comprehending why this is the case. At any rate, I thoroughly enjoyed this pod cast and love listening to all the different topics you bring up.

  7. Thanks Cassandra. It's good to hear from someone like that you found the episode both interesting and informative. I work especially hard on episodes like this to make sure that I am treating the topic with respect because I know a lot of people are challenged by BPD. I very much appreciate your comment. I hope you find the other episodes interesting as well.
